Sport Lisboa e Benfica commonly referred to as Benfica, is a multisports club based in Lisbon, Portugal. Although, they compete in a number of different sports, Benfica is mainly known for its football team, which historically has been the most successful in Portugal.

Benfica was one of the founding members of the Portuguese Liga in 1933, and, together with FC Porto and Sporting CP, they have never been relegated from the First Division (Primeira Divisão) of Portuguese football.

Due to the success and popularity of the football club, Benfica has built the biggest fan base among the big three clubs (Benfica, Porto, and Sporting) in Portugal. Benfica has one of the biggest fan bases in the world and in 2006, Benfica was acknowledged by Guinness World Records as having the largest number of paying club members in the world with 160,398 paid members. In 2009, Benfica’s paying club membership has grown to 171,000. As a result, Benfica remains the leader of international football clubs with the largest number of paying club members worldwide.

This modern resort boasts panoramic views of the Jamor valley. The 97 bright guestrooms are air-conditioned, all have cable television, and guests can take a dip in the swimming pool or work out in the gym. Benfica’s training ground has state-of-the-art training facilities in Seixal. The complex is called the Caixa Futebol Campus, named for sponsoring reasons after Caixa Geral de Depósitos, which is the largest banking corporation of Portugal. It is here that the professional team trains daily and also the home of all Benfica’s youth academy.

Lisbon is the capital city and largest city of Portugal, as well as Europe’s westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast. It lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River.

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world and has two sites listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site: Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Furthermore, in 1994, Lisbon was the European Capital of Culture and in 1998 organized an Expo '98 (1998 Lisbon World Exposition).

Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. Among all the metropolises in Europe, it has the warmest winters (together with Barcelona), with average temperatures 15 °C (59 °F) during the day and 8 °C (46 °F) at night in the period from December to February. The typical summer's season lasts about six months, from May to October, although also in November, March and April temperatures sometimes reach around 20 °C (68.0 °F).
